CS Cams install valve clearance Ok I’m getting ready to do corksport cams and I know that from engine to engine valve clearance (tappets) can vary but wanted to know from anybody here that has done these cams , what were the tappets range they use to adjust clearance. I know that when I do my install clearance is going to be different but just wanted to have an idea of around what measurements people here experienced in their install |
depends on your current tappet number and measured valve clearance when the new cams go in. when I tore down my motor to build it, my head had a wide range of tappet numbers. no two heads are alike. the best thing you can do is follow the instructions. pull 1 tappet at a time and enter the number into CS's spreadsheet. put tappet back in. repeat 15 more times. put the new cams in, torque cam caps. measure clearance at each tappet and enter that data into CS's spreadsheet. the spreadsheet will spit out a list of what tappets you need to achieve the proper clearance. remove cams. remove all tappets. whatever tappets you have in the list, go ahead and drop those in where the spreadsheet says they go. whatever is left on the list is what you need to buy or get from a local. I had 3 heads to pull tappets from and it wasn't enough. I had to get a few from a local and had to purchase two new ones from the stealership to end up with all clearances in spec. |

I bought from the local Mazda stealership. The tappet numbers I needed are irrelevant to your build. |
Random question, but why cams before a bigger turbo or built motor? |
Remember to measure the tappet when you pull it to make sure it hasn't worn down compared to the stamped number. If it's worn enuf you will end up ordering a new tappet that will be to big. I doubt you will have a issue unless you have a lot of miles. Are you going to do a vvt job while you are in there? |
If you want to be 100% sure just buy new buckets. |
Make sure to do some before and after logs so we can see the increase. Im still kicking myself for not doing them when i built the motor. The prospect of swapping cams is about as enticing as a catheter. |
There are many people making good power on stock head and cams. But I want cams too for my weak goals. |
From an old n/a point of view cams are the first mod after the basic intake/exaust.... I just wonder if you can increase lag of a large BT with more duration |
