AccessPORT V3 FTMFW!!!

So i got my v3 AP on tuesday and i have been playing with it ever since. it is a LARGE upgrade from what the v2 was and COBB really took into consideration a lot of things we had been asking for in general but they just implemented it into this new version. Here are some impressions and reviews from someone who had original AP v2 serial number 51 and bought it the week it came out in 2009 for the MS6.






The serial number is located under the faceplate for reference









Vehicle Mount:

This thing is legit. it has a fully articulating arm in the back which can lock into place so you can point it exactly how you want it. it also doesent have any clips to actually hold the AP to it because it uses a MAGNET!!! What a genius idea COBB had which makes it less prone to ripping off your dash because your struggling with some stuck clips. I havent figured out where i want to mount it yet but i will update this thread when i do so people can get some different ideas.

It also uses a standard t-slot in the back so that you can use any universal mount out there like the RAM mounts. Ive also been told that COBB will be coming out with vehicle specific mounts for vents/ect. in the future.

Cord:

They made the cord a nice and long at 6' so that it will reach anywhere you can think to put it. The clip on the end is really stellar because it actually CLIPS in and stays there unlike the old USB style that sometimes was wonky. I had a problem flashing initially because i diddent have it completely seated so just make sure its really snug if you see the same problem.






Screen/Features:

Coming from someone who has had a DH since day one and stares at it more often then the road i can say the screen is the best part. Being able to view 6 things at once is the only reason i never used my AP for anything besides flashing/logging because its so much easier when you can compare parameters in real time for troubleshooting or just general observation. Right now its only limited to 6 items at once but i have been told there are so many feature updates coming that this thing is going to become even more ridiculous.

It has an ambient light sensor on the front face which allows the unit to dim at night and remain bright during the day

The most wanted/useful feature that has been missing from the v2 was a POWER SWITCH!!! Holy shit its a whole new concept to be able to turn thing thing off and not have any screen burn in. Also, after you power it back on it returns back to the same screen you were on! so if you were previously monitoring stuff and then turn it off, it goes right back to live monitoring when it comes back on so you dont have to flip through a bunch of menus.



Logging/Flashing:

Being that its been about 4 years since the last time i installed/uninstalled an AP i dont really remember how long it took but when i did it with the v3 it was stupid fast. After flashing my first map i think it took about 30% less time then what i was used to which is nice when your doing dyno tunes or just in a hurry to get some logs done!

I have been doing some mechanical stuff to my car this week so i havent had much time for driving but i was able to get a log just for comparison purposes.

Previous data logs with AP v2

- 15 parameters
- 13.8 sec log
- 80 lines in excel

New AP v3 logs:

- 21 parameters
- 13.8 sec log
- 174 lines in excel

thats logging TWICE as fast with MORE parameters then with the old v2. Its really nice to be able to see this kind of resolution for when you have a split second event on a log and you need to see some before/after details to help you figure it out.


Overall im stunned with all these new v3 features and its well worth the price (esp with the trade in value). Feel free to use this thread for comments and questions and ill try and answer anything for people who are still on the fence.

God that thing looks like it is built so much better than the last one. Hiding the serial number sticker under the faceplate is a good idea, mine was starting to wear off a bit because its in my pocket soo much.

I'm glad they set it up to keep legitimately advancing with updates, this one is really worth what you pay and not some potatoe you overpay for (v2).

agreed. I don't feel as bad paying as much as i did for the new ap when the hardware is actually usable now for something other than logging/flashing.

Thanks super. Great write up!!!!! I have been debating whether it worth exchanging. I agree with you on why we use a DH over the AP v2 for monitoring. Too bad, there are a lot of things I lot to do like WMI, BT and tunes. I have to manage expenditures due to furloughs. But reading these great write ups makes me yearn for it even more. Hope to see you and your APv3 at CP-e bash.

the buttons have a rubber outside but are still hard like plastic inside so they "click" and not just deform like a normal rubber button.

Great write up... I just wish the AP would power off when the ignition is turned off, like the DH. It's great finally having the power switch, but I'd be worried about forgetting to turn it off one night, and coming out to a dead car battery and screen burn in...

Brings a thin plastic which I left to protect. Might go to the mall and get that gorrilla screen that they custom cut.

That would not be ideal for me. I drive a lot with the windows down and someone might swipe it away thinking its a mobile phone. I just looked at my dash and there is no flat spot to stick it in my genwon.

Hopefully by the time I get one they come out with the vent clip option.

I live in Austin where Cobb headquarters is and they have a first Thursday meet. They had a v3 on demo there and it's awesome. Definitely a step up from the v2. Now if I just had the money.

I use my AC to much and would hate to have it stuck on my vent which I actually considered since there is no good spot. I actually wont have it there all the time only time to time to make sure all is good. Also when I was track my car to keep up with temp. Since we dont have a temp gauge in my gen 2

Glad to see you're enjoying the new V3. Thanks for posting up your input.

Also, auto on/off has been in the works for awhile. I've had it working in my car for awhile but we found that random voltage spikes/drops were causing it to think the car was on or off. All in good time, my friends.
