I finally got my custom-made Ultrashield seats. They are part of my racecar build and will be accompanied by a custom weld-in cage forthcoming whenever my HPDE schedule allows.

The seat weighs 18.2 lbs and the cover weighs 2.8 lbs for a total of 21 lbs. For comparison, the MS6 driver seat with bracket weights 58 lbs and the passenger seat with bracket weights 44.2 lbs.

Here, I will document the whole process of building a cage and installing the seats and harnesses.

But enough talk, here's some pictars.

The seats and harnesses with all the options are almost $2,000.

The cage is $2,200 + need to pay for removal and reinstall of the windshield + whatever expenses arise as we go. I hope I will stay within a $5,000 total.

I will run a back brace on the seats, no FIA approval needed. Right now I do HPDE so it is not real racing yet, but will slowly work my way up to do time trials.

Keeping all the windows for now.

I am planning to strip the back doors completely and weld in some sort of support that will keep the back windows permanently shut.

For the front, the plan is to not have door bars for now. However, I already removed the plastic trim on the passenger side and it looks to me that if you cut out the plastic from the lower part of the door it may be possible to run door bars there without affecting the operation of the window. We will see what the cage guy says.

Any reason why you did not go with a LaJoie seat? I know they are pretty light and also custom made to your body. Very nice seats to sit in.

Yeah, and there are many other choices so no matter what seat you go with, there will always be somebody asking why not brand X.... Ultrashied is 150 miles from me and I like giving business to a TX company, considering I have not heard anything negative about their seats. The racing shop at the Texas World Speedway sells the seats and I was able to test them out before purchasing.

Makes sense. At least they would be easy enough to add later if you need them.

I still want to keep the car street legal, at least for another 2-3 years. The speedway is only 15 miles away from me, I do not want to trailer the car there yet.

I drive the shop B-Spec Mazda 2 on the street all the time and I get some crazy looks. The best was going to a meat and I was wearing my helmet, gloves, and waving to people on the freeway driving there.

I/O Port back braces arrived today. I will pull the passenger seat today and start removing sound deadening with dry ice. Tomorrow or Wednesday I will pull the dashboard in preparation for the cage and this weekend we will finally start working on it.
@aggierandy; sir, your seat should be available for pickup after Memorial Day weekend.

had I seen this thread earlier, I would've said I have all the ms6 doors here if you wanted to buy them and gut them for racecar. but god damn for living on the other side of texas.

I remember looking at their cages but they did not have a MS6 cage, only a Mazda6 cage, I know the dimensions are close but did not want to risk it.

Ok, the sound deadening is gone with the exception of those two thin stripes. For the record, the weight was 13 lbs. I hope to tackle the dashboard tomorrow.

Big thanks to @aggierandy; the dash was a bitch, I brought the whale back home, she is 21.4 lbs! The passenger air bag is 4.4 lbs and the driver (steering wheel) airbag is 2.8 lbs.

With all the seats out, according to my calculations, the car should be about 450 lbs lighter now, clocking in at 3,150! The racing seats, harnesses, and cage should add at least 250 lbs, I would be happy if the car ends up at 3,390.

The next step would be to remove the front crash bar (30 lbs), rear crash bar (26 lbs), BSD (15 lbs), and air conditioning (28 lbs), here's another 100 lbs. With a carbon fiber hood and trunk and Lexan windows it should be possible to have a fully race prepared MS6 at around 3,190.
