Threw this together in 30 seconds. The red bars are what he will have (I THINK! LOL) (although because of differences in the shapes of the cars the lower "X" will be higher (even with door bars as his builder described). All bars forward of the main hoop were omitted for clarity

Some progress pictures. Windshield is out, gussets are done and welded up, rear supports are next, then hoop diagonal brace, harness bar, rear X, and door bars.

I don't know much about building cages for road racing. Is there a certification process it has to go through periodically to be allowed (similar to nhra spec cages)?

When you build your own cage, you look up the official regulations of whoever you run with and build accordingly. For example, NASA technical requirements are here, section 11. At the track you will have to pass an inspection and you are good to go.

for the most part, if you build a NASA legal cage, it will most likely be accepted anywhere a cage is required. from what ive seen, NASA's rule set for cages is pretty strict/overbuilt for most all other orgs.

i.e. NASA requires two door bars for driver side, NHRA only requires 1.

Ok, so the cage is still a week or so away from being finished which means I will have to skip this weekend's HPDE. There is an open track day on the 29th though and I should be able to make it.

Meanwhile, I have been searching for a steering wheel setup to complement the cage. I need:

short hub
hub adapter
steering wheel

The NRG SRK-175H short hub for the MS3 will not fit, as the MS6 steering column is round/splined. The SRK-160H short hub fits the RX7, RX8, Miata, Protege, 626, and I emailed NRG for technical specs to see if it fits the MS6. Edit: The SRK-160H hub does fit.

Sam sent me the following measurements of the MS6 steering column:

Threads are 11.8mm
Splines are 15.65mm
Tapers up from there to 18.93mm
45mm from the end of the shaft (near threads) to the thickest portion.
Number of splines: 36

Is anybody running an aftermarket steering wheel and if so what short hub? I think @RhoadBlock; had an NRG steering wheel, do you remember what short hub are you running?

Man, I don't remember which hub it was. I got it from SU back when Mark was still holding it down there.

I'll have to try to dig deep thru emails/invoices to find what I ordered. One thing I'll note, with the hub, quick release and the dish in the wheel I couldn't reach the turn signal. It's not just a flick of the finger anymore, you gotta actually reach back to the lever. Not outweighed by how awesome the wheel was, esp with that quick release.

I'll try to dig and see if I can find exactly what I got and let you know.

The cage is welded in! Sam welded spreader plates in and all the six points. Since the dashboard is not going back in, we also added a knee bar.

Welding spreader plates is a two-man job as the floor pan is very thin compared to the plates and the gunky stuff that is underneath the car catches on fire, here's a .

Next is the diagonal bar and the harness bar, then door bars, and finally a lower X bar.

The diagonal and harness bars are done!

We are not doing the lower X bar as Sam said the rear support bars turned out much shorter then he expected. That leaves the door bars to finish the cage and here they are! They are not welded in yet but we did a fitment test and they fit perfect! We did not even have to cut the inner plastic cover. There will be three vertical braces running between the door bars. They should be welded in Monday and hopefully on Monday we will have time to paint the cage.

Are you going to thin out the wiring in the car? With all of the power options in the speed6 there has to be close to 30 lbs you can take out of the car with the window motors and what not.

All the welds are finished! The vertical braces for the door bars had to be welded just a bit to hold them in place, then the lower door bar came out and the welding of the braces was finished, then the lower bar went back in, we put the upper door bar on top, and finished the welding there.

We estimated we used about 73 linear feet of tubing, which should be about 153 lbs, add 8 lbs for the six spreader plates, and another 8 lbs for the seat brackets for a total of 169 lbs. I pulled about 470 lbs out of the car so it is possible that the net loss will be around 300 lbs and the car will end up about 3,300 lbs. I will try to get it weighed this or next week.

The window motors in the rear are gone, see here, I am keeping them in the front. I think I will pay someone to go through the car and pull the wiring that is no longer needed (stereo, antenna, seat belts, air bags).

.... aaaaand the cage is mostly painted! We used Rust-oleum High Performance Enamel spray in dark machine gray color.

Tomorrow Sam will touch up whatever is needed and paint the spreader plates and any exposed metal and we will hopefully install the seats, seat braces, hook up harnesses, install the steering wheel, hook up all the wires, and start the car. The windshield will not go back in until we are sure the cage and the car are all good, so if everything goes well I should have the car back on Wednesday.

3,600 stock - 470 gutted shit + 170 cage = 3,300
