Does my PTO or transfer case "valve" need replacing?

Took my bone-stock 2006 MS6 to the dealer for the 100k maintenance. The dealer states that my PTO or transfer case “valve” needs replacing. What does this valve do? Is there any outward sign of this valve failure e.g., a noise, the car throwing a code (with or without CEL), a noise when hard turning one direction, drips of tranny fluid where I park the car? The dealer is asking $1700 which is okay because I know it's a lot of labor but I feel they’re being dishonest with me and this might not need replacing. How can I confirm the PTO valve does need replacing?

Ask them what exact part they're trying to replace - get a part number.

It sounds like they're trying to take you for a ride. There are no valves in our PTO of which I am aware that need regular maintenance or replacement. So...

Ask them what they're talking about and make sure you get a part number IN WRITING.


That said, it IS quite common for the PTO to leak. I've had to have mine resealed 3 times at this juncture, and I never launch the car. If the PTO is leaking, the service to reseal it at my local Mazda dealer was about $860.

are they talking about the vent maybe? Those CAN get clogged up, but its not exactly a common replacement item.

Sounds like another flux capacitor replacement. Just say "no thanks". The only thing you'd ever should have to do at the 100k mile service is a fluid change in PTO. Anything else is case seal or axle seal related and completely up to you if you want to have it done. If your undertray or PTO case has fluid on it, its likely the PTO case seal. To reseal properly you need to pull from the car. The $860 quote from Vanquish sounds about right for the job.
