Mazdaspeed 6 General Build/Parts Thread

A few months back i made a Mazdaspeed 6 General Build/Parts Thread on another forum and since i am liking this thread more and more and have used it for some installs i figure i would share it here to help this Mazda Community.

It starts out with 3 stages to help guide you on your want to making a solid car.

The second section is a listing by stage with a link to almost every part for the speed 6.

If the stages don't help the community i will delete it but i figure new people can use this to build their cars and to find parts easier instead of asking. Hope it helps

Additional Info is Welcome!

General Build Thread

To start out I want to say that this thread will favor the Cobb AP over any tuning device since I feel it is the best on the market. Other tuning devices are CP-E, Hypertech, Unichip & Versatuner

So here are the stages. Note: there is no particular order to get these products and this is just a general guide

Stage 1 -

-I recommend start out with buying the Cobb AP. it can be used on a stock car/also allows for monitoring the car.
-short ram intake or cold air intake with supporting turbo inlet pipe
-Upgraded bypass valve or blow off valve
-Upgraded spark plugs
-Rear engine motor mount
-3 inch test pipe

Stage 2 -

-3 inch exhaust
-Upgraded downpipe
-Top mount intercooler/front mount intercooler ( preferably fmic over tmic for better cooling )
-Upgraded fuel pump for higher than stock boost levels and power
-Upgraded rear differential brace and mount.
-Upgraded Passanger Side Engine Mount, Transmission Mount & Front Engine Mount

(note: all of the above mods will work well with the stage 2 tunes on the Cobb AP or may need a slight tweek in the tune.)

after stage 2 is where the power mods come in. you can go as far as you want with it. both stage 1 & 2 will give you everything you need to support these power mods.

(note: all mods after will require some sort of protune/etune. it is recommended to speak to a professional or someone who is very knowledgeable in tuning the speeds. there is someone over on mazdaspeed forums named djuosnteisn who seems to be e/tuning alot of peoples cars and many of them seem to be very happy with it. http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...ne-list-89893/ )

Stage 3-
-Meth kit
-Intercooler Sprayer
-Turbo Upgrade
-Depending on turbo upgrade a new turbo inlet and 3"intake
-Turbo Manifold
-Upgraded Wastegate Actuator
-Engine Upgrade like pistons and rods or new motor
-Upgraded Radiator
-Ported Intake Manifold
-Ported Throttle Body
-Upgraded Clutch
-Upgraded Flywheel
-Upgraded Ignition System

Additional Supporting Mods-
Additional monitoring system
Turbo Timer
Boost Gauge
Upgraded short shifter & bushings
Shifter Cable Relocation
Front & Rear Sway Bar
Lowering Springs and Coilovers
Balance Shaft Delete
Thermal Insulating Gasket
Boost Controller
Oil Catch Can
Front & Rear Strut Bar
EGR Block Off Plate
Injector Seals
Map Sensors & Harness
Overboost Protection

This is all i can think of right now. Of course people are welcome to add more if i am missing any.

Just to add to your list, Full Race makes a killer 2pc downpipe for these cars and RPS as well as Southbend both have clutches near production. :)

Code Monkey 06-01-2012 11:11 AM

I would add SPC ball joints to stage 1 (really any stage) - combined with a proper alignment it makes the car a different animal handling-wise.

TiGraySpeed6 06-01-2012 12:18 PM

Shame you're not VIP, I suspect @Raider would reward this effort

Raider 06-01-2012 12:25 PM

Damn. this is def $$ MSF Bucks worthy of a reward. but no VIP.

Raider 06-01-2012 12:33 PM

If @barone takes time and posts up the links to his stuff, I can add it too.

TiGraySpeed6 06-01-2012 12:42 PM

List is in need of the MD SM OCC link - OCC KITS MAZDASPEED6 - Performance Automotive Development LLC

I do hope this turns into a good thread for people to turn to for helpful info. i have always said that people need a helpful structured guide/list for modding for this car.

This thread in total took well over 20 hours of research so far on different companies sites. Raider if you know of a way to make it more appealing to the community here let me know and i will try to correct it the best i can.

Raider 06-01-2012 12:58 PM

Wow. Well, at least the 5 remaining users are in luck, lol.

TiGraySpeed6 06-01-2012 01:05 PM

smokeys36shop, I want to thank you for this info, I just picked up my used Speed6 since I totaled my 3 and have been looking for a post like this since I'm sure as hell not making a noob "what should I do first" thread. You've make my life 20x easier. Well deserved sticky, nice work.

darkcherry 07-07-2012 01:54 AM

This should be a sticky for noobs! Awesome job on the research and time that went into making this thread. Also would like to add a side note. Corksport has a new front sway bar coming out the middle/ end of July for the mazdaspeed 6 and it is 28.5mm. Reasonably priced. Just a FYI for this thread and to add to that they are in the development to a few more items they have not made public yet for the mazdaspeed 6's.

No problem. Its something i always felt the speed 6 community needed.

thanks. yes i get corksports emailed news letter and saw the front sway bar was coming soon so i will be adding it when it hits. Still waiting for Jbarone to come out with his 3.5 inch intake for our cars as well. Other than those 2 companies i don't think i need to add anything new to that list yet.

Added Street Units Exhaust Manifold - StreetUnit Exhaust Manifold

smokeys36shop 07-25-2012 02:22 PM

added Injector Seals, Map Sensors / Harness & Overboost Protection to the bottom of the list

Coaststarlight 08-08-2012 02:42 AM

Add Go-Fast-Bits "Respons" BOV to BOV list, Works quite well on the Speed

Options include being able to go from Full recirc and Full VTA and Anywear in between with a twist of a built-in knob and Fully adjustable/tunable spring load

Why is BPV/BOV an assumed upgrade? What necessitates this?

The stock bpv for me was a piece of crap. Not saying all of them are but mine was leaking. I personally don't like the stock plastic bpv and an upgraded metal one is something worth investing into if you ever plan on turning up the boost or for just holding proper boost levels. My factory boost levels were around 12-13 lbs of boost when I was stock. As soon as I upgraded to a aftermarket bpv I noticed I was where I was supposed to be from the start. That's my experience with it and is a reason why I added it where I did.

Again this is a general guide. No need to follow it 100%. I have met people in the past who just love the stock bpv but many who hated it and experienced the same issues I did with holding proper boost levels.

Quite a few links were broken in the OG post so I fixed them and added a couple things along with a section for e-tunes as that's getting more popular. Just need Gary to copy/paste this into the original post.

Tried to quote it in this post but it's giving me a database error...

Pistons

Recently took the engine apart on my ms6 and found what I already figured was wrong (cracked piston). I am looking for forged pistons to buy any suggestions on a specific brand?
