Simple controller design and programming

Anyone know how to design a controller module that is 12vdc powered, can controll a stepper motor on a 0-5v map reference? It cant be that damn hard but that really isnt something that I know anything about.

The fleece performance Holset he351ve turbo controller is exactly what I stated and it is usb programmable with a single table... and its $600... I dont need it to be pnp or anything, it just needs pigtails.

The table is basically 0-5vdc in and specific voltages equal a certain number of steps on the stepper motor on the turbo. I believe the stepper on the turbo has 42 steps.

Is this something that can be done for less than $600?

Edit1: the stepper on the turbo has 4 wires, a power, a ground, a high data link, and a low data link. The two data link wires are pulsed. Gonna look for voltage and Hz specs.

Edit2: inside the vgt controller there is are three position sensors, a stepper, and a microprocessor and communication is can-bus based.

Wow that looks great, they offer alot for cheap! Now to figure out which board is best and how to program it... Anyone have a suggestion?

Arduino Compatible ATmega328 Board with added feat

That one looks like it has everything I need, industrial temp range, usb programmable, 9-30vdc power, and a expansion port for a digital/analog i/o board which can support can and pwm...

Man I really need to do some research on this lol, I am getting over my head fast.

wait wait wait... would it be possible to splice a connection from the pigtail to the stock ebcs to the wires on the turbo? you would have to bypass and ignore the sensors and processor on the turbo but you could use the wdgc and boost tables already in atr to control the turbo. but that sounds much too easy...

First you need to define exactly how the VGT controller works. What inputs does it expect and need, electrical ranges for the inputs, and what they do to control it. For example you mention there are 2 wires that are pulsed. What frequency, voltage, and what does do they actually do?

It seems that the can bus is protocol based so signal replication shoudnt be needed, you just need to know what commands to send and the vgt microprocessor converts that into steps for the stepper motor. Supposidly the can bus is kind of like usb in that you have devices that all connect to a host using the same communication language and the devices identity themselves to the host and the host loads a driver to use it.

I know nothing about can bus communication but if its half as easy as usb stuff my brother can program it. He knows like 13 programming languages or some crazy shit. I just need to be able to tell him exactly what I need and he can figure out the code side.

Like obd2 gives commands and receives a answer I assume can is the same way. Command the vane open and it opens not any differently than a dbw throttle body.

I am sure there is a startup self check which determines the range and throws a error if its outside of limits, then it locates the position of the vanes, that is probably dont by the internal microprocessor. Then it accepts commands to move the vanes.

Relatively speaking, CAN BUS is super easy.
Having said that, your brother needs to program a box for the center console display LCD <3

I know CAN quite well. Does the turbo have a CAN based receiver? You'd have to know what messages it is expecting. The ECU drives the throttle directly (not across the bus) so this would be a little different.

It doesnt have a standardized command structure? I figured that you could just basically look it up lol.
