Default 2004 MSM to join the pack!!

Greetings,

I did not think this day would come so soon but a dealer just a few miles away from me had this baby for sale. I had a fetish of owning two mazdaspeed vehicles in matching color (or close). This will be fun and a great way to become more hands on. This car is so much simpler than my MS3.

2004
39k miles, clearly a weekend car,
Great condition with leather interior (no red fabric)
Dark Gray to match my silver MS3
FM exhaust (just the catback it seems)
FM boost gauge
everything else seems stock (intake, etc.)
12,750 + tax/fees.
Code Monkey and Skyman88 like this.

Congrats, sounds like an outstanding deal!
Hope she treats ya well!

Like many Speed6 owners I have no desire to own a 3, but would grab a nice speed miata in a heartbeat!

I don't think anyone that enjoys performance would move to a FWD platform. If all you've driven is FWD cars, it's easy to move to a Speed3.

Thank you, it's a fun little car. It's interesting to drive both cars back to back and experience the difference in driving feel. The MS3 engine is so much more refined, the MSM is a go-kart with a little turbo that only works from 4-5500 rpm and generates 10 psi. I'm going to install the "little enchilada" from FM next year to make this work the way it should.

I still like the MS3 for it's huge torque and more refined drivertrain. I think that as far as FWD goes, it's a really great platform- I had a lot of fun autocrossing with it for the last few years. Now it's time to learn how to drive a RWD car.

I enjoy both, MS3 has a lot more torque.

Ha!
This is interesting, it looks like I have a full turboback from FM, Forge BPV and BEGI TB hose. Everything else seems stock: intercooler, intake. WTF?
I guess it's a bonus but I'm not sure what to do know. Also the car does hesitate at high rpm under boost.

Front of the car is on the left.

The car is safe with those parts on it as-is. Just get an intake, an MBC, and an intercooler and enjoy the power a multi-vendor LE. And then start playing with the suspension/wheels/tires.

I was actually quite worried about this setup because I have no clue if it's safe for the engine. On a modern platform (like the MS3), missing one part translates into a immediate disaster down the road (intake with no tune, no HPFP, etc.). I guess you can get away with far more on the older, simpler platform. Assuming this is all I have in terms of modifications, is it safe for autocross as well?

Thanks for your help.

Flyin' Miata has sold the Little Enchilada kit with no tuning device for years. Your car will be fine. The car is a decade old now, and all of this information is readily available on other forums. I'd recommend you start reading up at mazda-speed.com.

I agree with Crarrs. You're familiar with m-s.com because I saw you posted over there as well. There's a wealth of information from guys who know our cars inside and out over there. Flyin' Miata has a very good reputation amongst the Miata community for their quality of products and customer service. My MSM is the 4th Miata i've owned and each of my previous cars had some Flyin' Miata product installed with no issues at all.

Thank you to both of you, your help is much appreciated. Time to learn about a new platform! I'll probably add an intake and upgrade the intercooler + MBC and that's it for now, I also have to probably update the suspension and change the final ration to a 3.63. This is my auto-x/track/weekend car. I know the gearing is too short for auto-x right now but I really like this model.

So you can essentially run full intake and turboback with a MBC as long as you don't run out of fuel (which is around 10 psi I think). How will I ever know if the car is running lean? I can't log anything lol.

The stock Bilstein suspension is more capable than you are, and will be for some time.

When you do decide to upgrade, do not cheap out. This is a Mazdaspeed, it deserves proper dampers. Not Megans, or BCs, or any of that other garbage.

It will be beneficial to replace the differential bushings, and motor mounts if you plan to engage in high performance driving. There is no transmission mount, so while cornering the trans just flops around. Pretty easy to misshift, and break a shift fork/pad assuming you have <200 treadwear tires.

If you unplug the TPS, you could run 12psi on the stock 265cc injectors (lol). Buy a wideband to confirm though...

AEM SRI is good for 30whp.. so do that quick like. Also, lose those boat anchor 17's, and don't try to ask more than 250 for them like Crarrs has been for what, a year now.. they won't sell. I sold my '05 wheels (which look way better) for $180.

Nice! I am thinking about adding a second mazda within the next year as well. I am planning on getting a 93 RX7. Hopefully I can find a stock one and build it myself.

They sold last year for $350 to a dude on ebay. And he paid shipping to the east coast!

You can thank me later for the bump in resale value I gave your wheels. If you're prepared to wait, they'll sell to somebody who wants them.

Very happy with the MSM so far. Car runs great besides the usual OEM ECU issues. I'm going to install the FM O2 sensor modifier at some point.

- Replaced brakes all around with OEM mazda parts + SS brake lines
- AEM intake

As far as boost is concerned, I'm on the stock boost controller but it looks like I'm hitting close to 10 psi already in 5th and 6th in hot weather so I'm not sure if a MBC is even needed...

I'm curious, anyone had any luck with 305cc injectors to help the car run a little richer and correct the lean condition?

There is a lot of body movement and other oscillations you will need to control better with more precise hand speed/movement and application of the throttle.

Are you still on the 17s? It seems like there should be more grip once the car does actually plant, that I am used to seeing.

The ovenmitts are a nice touch. Its nice to see you so prepared to punch a fire square in the jaw in your shorts and t shirt.

Anyhow, thanks for sharing the vids, always love to see those.

I am on the stock 17s, the car came with brand new (crappy) Continental extreme DW summer tires so I need to wear these out first. Also, with the short gearing, I'm not sure with 15s I'll be able to find the right tire size to not loose any MPH.

The oven mittens are a gift from my wife, she tries lol. Actually, given that I'm a generally sweaty and disgusting human being, having a good grip on the steering wheel and shifter is a plus.

Those 17s are holding you back now, and will continue to do so as your driving improves. Everyone uses 15s as they are lighter, the tire selection is much larger, and they are much cheaper vs 17" tires. Even knock off wheels are 4-5lbs per corner lighter than those OEM 17s... then include the weight of the 17" tire vs a 15".... that much weight makes a HUGE difference in handling.

Crappy tires are the best to learn the limits on, so the DWS are fine for now.

I agree it forces me to learn. What tire size do you recommend?

Did you try running 305cc injectors with stock ECU?
