... here's another dose of dick up my ass, ladies and gentlemen, let me present a 1991 Miata:

-- 182,000 miles and basically stock
-- long-nosed crank engine
-- Power steering, no ABS, crank up windows
-- AC does not work
-- perfect interior, no tears on driver's seat!!!!
-- no rust!!!!
-- paint is completely shot but body is straight
-- minor fender bender in the rear, no dents, but the trunk has a small gap
-- engine bay is sparkling clean, all new fluids
-- purchased from a retired gentleman for $1,250

Drove it home yesterday from New Orleans without any hiccups.

The plan is to keep the car stock for the time being, I will need a second reliable daily for my parents' upcoming visit. In the fall, I will start thinking more seriously which way I want to go with the car. Meanwhile, I have the following things to do:

-- replace top weather stripping on both sides as it leaks
-- the seller said he got new brake pads but I think the rotors are warped
-- front license plate relocation bracket
-- install a loud horn
-- replace shifter boots

Another thing to fix is the spacing of the clutch pedal and the dead pedal. The gap between them is too small for my foot and I have to slide the foot at a weird angle or underneath.

If it makes you feel good my miata is the complete opposite of my ms6. It behaves well and is cheerful and nice and easy to work on. I'd sand it flat and plastidip it for time being.

@Code Monkey I'm seriously thinking about getting the front bumper and hood wrapped on my white car. Not a clear bra but a 3M wrap. It may be less expensive than a new paint job and carries a five year full guarantee. Will let you know.

Just yesterday I saw one of my neighbors sanding his project car, I stopped by and told the guy I could use his skills on my Miata, it is possible with his help I will be able to sand and prime the car, and then just drop it off for a decent paint job. Also, Bill at the Bug Clinic said that he had a paint guy who could do the whole car for $1,500 but I have to talk to the guy to see what exactly that involves.

Stopped by O'Reillys yesterday to buy some stuff and ordered rear rotors for $19.99 each.

Fixed more shit today.

The shifter is assembled with new bushings and boots:

The interior is back together and vacuumed:



In preparation for a radiator cooling panel I decided that the two wires that you can see here in the engine bay coming out near the hood latch should be relocated underneath. Of course, one of the wires goes around the whole front as it connects the headlights and the hazard lights so this is what Code Monkey had to do:



But no worries, the front is already back together with the wires tucked under:



I replaced many old rusty nuts and bolts with new shiny ones that came from my speed6:



Also picked up a new under tray today as the old one is mushy and broken in several places, and ordered tow hooks and a dual hood lift kit. Next on the list is probably the steering wheel as it is too big and annoys the shit out of me. Will probably go with an NRG 320mm wheel, of course with a quick release and hub.

Titled and registered the Miata today. The total for the car came out to $2,105.

Noticed that one tire is slowly losing pressure, like 2-3 psi per day. If the rim is bent I will be purchasing a set of 15 x 8's.

Had the shop do a compression test today: 190-190-180-190, fuck yeah, now I can look into adding some timing.

Things ordered/replaced so far:

-- replaced bent clutch pedal
-- new shifter boots
-- new shifter bushings
-- new rear rotors
-- new plastic under tray
-- wiper cowl
-- radiator cooling panel
-- new convertible top weatherstripping
-- tow hooks
-- front license plate bracket
-- Nautilus air horn
-- dual hood lift kit

Things about to be ordered:

-- glove box (one hinge is broken)
-- oil dipstick (broken ring)
-- speedometer cable (speedometer is way off)
-- timing belt & water pump
-- exhaust hangers
-- AWR 88 duro motor mounts
-- straight shot clutch line (stock has a shitty loop in it)

I think all this, and fixing that leaking tire, should get the car through my parents' visit.

A few weeks ago I finally installed a front tow hook so I could attach a license plate. The plate relocation kit I bought from GarageStar is made for a baby tooth tow hook while a real tow hook sticks out further so the result was not good:



I took the bracket to a machine shop and went from this:



to this:



which resulted in this:





The bracket is stainless steel so the machine shop charged almost $30.

Today I replaced the front rotors -- all the pulsation from the brakes is finally gone.

Also popped in a new steering wheel -- the stock Miata (and MS6) steering wheel is 370mm, I have a 350mm suede wheel in the MS6, and for the Miata I ordered a 320mm leather wheel, here is a comparison of the three sizes:



I had to dremel out the column cover a bit as the new short hub and adapter are a bit bigger than the base of the stock wheel:







The new steering wheel looks tits.





And because the MS6 wheel uses the same adapter, I can use it in the Miata too.





Next, probably a timing belt/water pump replacement, it is due.
