(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Ok so my fuel pump internals arrived today, I wasn't home to get them so I got the note saying they would be back. No big deal, I look at the note, $75 duty fees. $75 duty fees on a package weighing it at around 8lbs and small... UPS absolutely rapes us on deliveries out of country with the brokerage fees. Could you think about offering a different service for that? Maybe USPS? Fedex even. In my experience, I've just found that UPS seems to tag on, what seems to be, extra 'duty' fees. I do know there will be some going across the border, thats totally fine and understandable, but I brought 1/2 of my computer across the border myself and I paid right around $75 for $1700 worth of various computer components. I ordered a phone case from the states through UPS and they charged me $15 for a $10 largely plastic case. Please consider it. On the off hand, I'm super excited that my Autotech internals are going to be in my car soon. No more running out of fuel pressure for this guy

| Not Ranked : 0 score I ship shift knobs via usps all the time to Canada. Usually cost around $15-20 total for a small package weighing about 2lbs. They also have international flat rate boxes, so as long it fits and is under a weight limit, thats all you pay. I dont know about large things though

| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm sure there is the matter of delivery confirmation. The consumers will all say they'll take their chances with usps... right until their $1000 doesn't show up and no one can track it.

| Not Ranked : 0 score If an item ships via UPS, I don't buy it. Shipping is already expensive to Canada...then you add another 25% in "brokerage." Just not worth it, never had a single problem with USPS.

I'm also from Manitoba, There are many cross boarder parcel handlers you could have shipped to and then pickup up or worse case clear your own package. | |

| Not Ranked : 0 score IMO, Never ship with UPS period. When I ordered my downpipe I watched the truck driver bounce it down his steps. When I ordered my intercooler both end tanks showed up damaged. Yesterday I received a lift for my Jeep and one of the boxes had the entire corner open and one of the body pucks was missing. I'm tired of dealing with their bullshit.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I don't like UPS for the reason that you can't hold anything for pickup until one delivery attempt is made, no matter what. so if you know that you won't be home, they refuse to hold or redirect it and you're going to miss the delivery. after that then you have to call their crappy customer service on the phone. With Fedex, as soon as I have a tracking number, i go to the website and change the delivery it to a hold for pick up at the nearest location and it goes straight there, and i pick it up. No need to call a crappy customer service line, and their offices are a billion times nicer than the UPS customer centers which are warehouses with 3 people in them. It seems that UPS is better suited for businesses that have/need daily pickup where Fedex makes much better effort towards residential and individual customers as well by having a better system, website, retail locations.

That's not correct, at least for me. I have ups mychoice or something like that. It's free, but i had to register. I can have it held before any attempts are made.

| Not Ranked : 0 score thank you for the correction, i have never registered for that extra service thing on UPS. on the fedex site, it isn't necessary. i find it kind of strange that over the phone they WILL NOT hold anything for pick up before the first attempt, but you can do it on their website if you register.

With a pretty large shipment I got from another vendor (they did some custom stuff which I wanted so i ordered some other stuff as well) I ended paying more via some known to be cheap freight forwarding service than if I shipped those via DHL. So the shipping costs and taxes aren't that big either.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I bought my whiteline ALK from somewhere else because I saw no USPS option. UPS charges a fee over and above taxes and other normal border fees. Also it seems to be random if you get charged border fees or not, I'm thinking it may have to do with paperwork but I'm not sure.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Another +1 to Bay City Brokers, I use them for certain shipments up here. There's a lot that goes into predicting costs coming over the border. There's duty on certain items (6% on car parts but not if they're made in USA and you have NAFTA paperwork along with the shipment), then regular tax, along with the brokerage charge. Plus you need to factor in the exchange rate and if paying by canadian credit card, there's often a 2.5% fee for foreign currency (chase backed cards are one of the few that doesn't have that 2.5%). The other thing is, it's hit and miss sometimes...I've had packages left on my porch that should have had duty/tax but they just didn't bother for some reason. Others I've gotten hammered with the full charges. It's just the cost of buying from the states. That all said, Edge is one of my favourite places to order from in the states (along with Corksport) as both companies have helped get my packages up here at very reasonable costs. I just bought a southbend clutch from them and I think I paid about the same as you did in cross border fees for your fuel pump lol

| Not Ranked : 0 score For you Canadians, is there any reason some of you prefer USPS to DHL? I'm honestly not sure about all the different fees that you guys get charged from the different shipping services vs customs, but it would be nice to know who charges the most so maybe we can put up a warning on the site or at least a shipping recommendation. DHL has been phenomenal to pretty much every other country, but it seems most Canadians still prefer USPS. And of course we know that UPS is not a good option for shipping to canada... Outside of Canada, we pretty much never ship USPS. JBR only ships USPS so if we have to drop ship from him it will be shipped via USPS. Richmond California Sort Facility Yelp Reviews Read some of these reviews, they are pretty funny. We've done battle with that place a time or two... Its part of the reason we avoid shipping USPS as much as possible to everyone but Canada. That and our dealings with our own local USPS... |

| Not Ranked : 0 score USPS gets delivered by Canada Post up here...which is convenient since there are tons of post offices and places to deal with them and familiar delivery methods. DHL being a courier will only have one or two places in a city to deal with them, often handled by third parties too...which can be a pain in the ass. When my clutch came DHL, it took me a few days to arrange a delivery/pickup after getting the first notice on the door. I had to go to some little warehouse in an industrial park to pick it up. Fee's wise, there's tax (13% if it's HST), duty (6% on non-US car parts), and brokerage (variable by carrier, UPS/FedEx have some of the highest rates). Additionally you have to pay exchange to Canadian dollars and usually the tax/duty is charged on the Canadian amount IIRC. Also most people's credit cards charge an additional 2.5% for foreign currency. I guess long and short, when buying from a US place take the Item Cost + Shipping Cost and multiple it by around 1.4 and that's what we need to pay right now (given exchange rate has taken a shit kicking). The one saving grace, and this is probably why people like USPS, is that sometimes for some odd reason you get lucky and they don't charge you anything. This is especially true on physically small items that the delivery people can drop in postal boxes.

Basically as soon as USPS parcels cross the border they turn into CanadaPost. Which as stated above, has tons of depo's and they usually have good service. I know from talking to someone in the company that 90% of the time they don't charge duty if they can drop it in your mailbox (or into the larger compartment most community mailboxes have). Hell I've been to the store and they rarely charge me over $20 for duty. The last time I used them from US to Canada was with my computer case. $160 for the case US, it gets to their store, they go meh, give us around $20 that will cover costs. And it was a massive 30lb case. I've only had to deal with FedEx once, but I have friends around me that have used them a couple of times. At least in my area, FedEx is almost worse then UPS.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I live outside of Saskatoon, so I have a different take on shipping companies than you guys might. FedEx is the fastest for me. UPS has 1 depot in the whole city and they're usually only open for pickup between 6 and 8 PM. Half of the time UPS sends my parcels over to Purolator to be held for pickup. It's really hard to pick stuff up the day it gets here because I have to wait for 6pm to go to UPS, go to UPS and find out that it's over at Purolator. And Purolator says "no UPS still has it, we don't have it" and it's back & forth like this until one of them realizes that , yes they do still have it (usually the next day). FedEx goes to their own building 100% of the time and my favourite company to deal with. Purolator is bad, the employees that work the desk are bitchy and condescending. USPS/Canada Post is fast or slow depending on customs. I think the longest I've waited is about 3 weeks for something. Easy package pickup, but sometimes they're annoying because my "address" is a land location but the mailing address is a PO Box. My worst experience was when Edge shipped my UR testpipe straight from UR to avoid import fees and I had to get them to ship it to Purolator's WH because UR didn't want to ship it to a PO box (UR shipped via UPS which I knew, so I assumed it would end up at Purolator). But apparently Purolator doesn't accept parcels addressed to their warehouse so they held it for a bit and sent it back to UPS. Most annoying trip ever. I've used DHL once, no complaints. TL;DR UPS isn't the best, I despise Purolator, FedEx is pretty good, and USPS/Canada Post is pretty good. PS How long until meth kits go on sale?
