Default Ecoboost Intake Manifold VS MZR Intake Manifold

I ordered an Ecoboost 2.0L manifold and got it in today. Let's compare.

Next to stock:

Same pattern for throttle body, just too bad it faces down:

Port for the "sound symposer":

MAP sensor port (takes same MAP sensor as the MZR):

Intake ports vs MZR's. Has 1 large port instead of 2 (no VTCS). They obviously dont line up with the MZR's. It would not seal on our head due to the seals overlapping the runners:

Mounted up to the MZR. Bolts up fine and would have enough clearance for our fuel rail:

cld12pk2go, SLOWHATCH and Atomic41 like this.

Just seeing this for the first time... that vertical TB would allow some interesting FMIC routing.

Curious what it flows like; it shouldn't be hard to machine an adapter plate to match/seal the ports

Considering most FMIC pipings, and the fact that the IM already sits close to the radiator fan ... yes it would lol.

Didn't think about space between the manifold and the fan lol... yep, that could definitely be an issue.

Oil filter housing as well... fuck maybe it's completely impossible.

If anyone is up to the task of getting an adapter made, I will gladly send the manifold their way. I looked into making a phenolic adapter, but the material was just too expensive.

Once I get my motor installed, I plan to test fit the manifold to check radiator clearance.

I'd say aluminum would be the cheapest route to get one made up.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but does it clear the oil filter housing?

IIRC it would clear, but it's close. Remember that the Ecoboost oil filter housing is in the exact location as ours, but their oil cooler lines are routed a different way. I will update the thread once I check fitment while installed in car.

If you were able to get some, I would much appreciate it.

I would need 16"x 2.5". 1/2" thickness would probably be the best for a smooth transition but I'm sure 1/4" or 3/8" would work fine.

I will gladly throw some $$ or favors your way if you can do this.

I had play around with this manifold and Made a flange so it will fit a disi head and come to my Senses that the manifold can handle high boost because it Plastic the max is 24psi before going boom

Wrap it in carbon fiber cloth and epoxy resin, it will hold pressure then.

My exact guess was 24psi for what this manifold was capable of. You used a manifold from a N/A Focus, correct? I am not sure where I am going with this experiment, but I'm hoping this will benefit both platforms in some way.

Any chance you could post pics of your flange?

Mounted the manifold up to a buddy's MS6 today to check fitment.

The main issue is that the dipstick would prevent us from routing piping straight down. The N/A manifold would prevent this.

The starter is close, but it doesn't appear to be a show stopper. The N/A manifold would prevent this.

The coolant hoses are directly in the path of the cold pipe. The N/A manifold would prevent this.

The manifold hits the fuel pressure sensor. IIRC, the JMF manifold uses an elbow to relocate the sensor.

The PS pump hit the bracket, which could be easily cut off.

There was plenty of spacing between the manifold and radiator (probably 1.5"-2").

I don't see us running this manifold. The N/A manifold won't have a MAP port, and is plastic as well so would be limited to about 24psi.

Here are the pics...

PS pump.

I am starting to consider fabricating an elbow for the throttle body to the stock location. This would solve most of the problems. I am trying to find 2 throttle body flanges.

Thanks for sharing pictures and testing. Looks like a nice design apart from the slight fitment issues.

I gather the ST does not have intake based EGR.

Do you think the symposer port could be used for those needing to pass emissions. Its in roughly the right place.
In the pictures it looks like the symposer port might shoot straight in No. 3 runner... or does the port channel off into the center of the plenum from there?

Not sure what makes you guys think 24psi is max because its a "plastic" intake manifold. Its actually an FRP composite which is pretty strong. The honey comb structure isn't for looks but rather to reinforce the intake manifold in key points.

The ecoboost uses a valve timing driven egr. Aside from weight and thermal properties what are you seeing as advantages of this manifold?

Interesting. If I do get it mounted, I will be pressure testing it.

The only major benefit I can see other than thermal is more even flow. I didn't buy this intending to use it, but it was really inexpensive ($67). I was just hoping that it would only take a couple small modifications to work.

Just go ahead and bolt a fairly thick (or c channel) piece of steel or aluminum to the head ports and TB inlet, drill and tap the TB plate for an NPT fitting and hook it up to a compressed air source. Slowly up the air with a regulator from a safe location until you reach your desired test pressure.
