Default EdgeAutosport.com's Focus ST Build w/ GTX2867R

Hey guys, just thought we'd start a thread here about out Focus ST build. We've had a lot of fun with it so far but recently started getting pretty serious with it. We just put on the GTX2867R kit from ATP Turbo and we're currently street tuning it. We'll keep posting as progress is made. Hope you guys enjoy it!

We'd like to start by thanking @kmac; and @atvfreek; as we are constantly getting their help and input on the platform.

You don't need a proper tune, FSWerks has all your tuning needs done with a single revision! :p

Are you going to do an install walk-through? Parts needed and used? This is something the community will definitely be asking about.

Nice build btw

I'm interested in seeing how people who are proficient on the mazdaspeed platform are able to build and transform the ST platform. Between Lex, Edge, JBR, Freek...2014 should be an interesting year.

Car looks clean! cant wait to see the results.

Any fitment issues with the turbo install?
No fitment issues whatsoever. I believe this car is easier to work on than the Mazda. Although one of the reasons is because, well uhhh, there's no exhaust manifold lol. But it's a bit easier to move around in. The intercooler piping is under the car and fits easily too. Vband downpipe from the factory too....thank you Ford.

Well, the ST's bigger injectors are just some injectors from a Jaguar that happen to fit the ST. They aren't really that much bigger either but every little bit helps.

The gearing in the ST is phenomenal! Plus the fact that it apparently loves to rev makes for the ability to do over 100mph in third gear. Can't wait till the drag strip opens up here for us to slap some slicks on and see what happens

Dont know much about the ST, but how does the whole "E-Diff" play into larger power numbers? Does it cause you any issues?

Well they learned a good amount of things from the Mazdaspeed program. Too bad Mazda themselves dropped the ball on a follow up to their own car.

The handling and turn in are excellent for the street and fun. On the track you overtook the brakes eventually.

Hmm might have to invest in an focus ST, And see where its goes. They look really fun to drive but there are a few things I do dislike about them.

The ST devours pads on track days. At the track, I've heard the ST going thru a set of pads in a day. Beautiful car though and looking forward to the progress.

Doesn't this car use the brakes to fight torque steer? I feel like that would become a problem when you start making a lot of power, unless you guys found a way to disable that. Have you guys ran into any problems with the electronic diff those use? Anyways, looking forward to seeing what comes of all of this!

Does use the brakes to reduce torque steer. Once the brakes are gone so is the awesome handling. A mechanical diff is supposed to help with the ediff. Hopefully a mechanical diff is in the build plans.

Damn it, I almost held out for an ST. Now I'm starting to wish I had. Over 100 in 3rd gear?? Stock turbo MS3 runs out of breath at 100 in 4th.

It's all in the gearing... I hope you don't think it's still pulling any harder than an MS3 at 100+. It has a K03, so if the K04 is blowing hot air, I'd imagine the K03 is spitting fire.

With a BT the car will handle 3rd gear at 100 fine. OTS tune's from cobb up the redline to 7500. I personally never have taken it that far but would be fun as hell to have a BT to push it to there.

The car stock is not very fast and doesn't have much top end. The ms3 stock turbo has better top end when tuned. But the gearing is taller in the ST. You'd still want a BT to make it move properly up there.

It uses brakes to simulate limited slip. The torque steer compensation is actually in the electric power steering setup. Quaife sells a MechDiff for this car, about $1000.

How do the electronics go when you swap in a real diff?

I understand that if we're comparing stock for stock, but I'm thinking about as power is increased. We'll probably be seeing some impressive BT ST's in no time.

I'm guessing you could hit 60 in 2nd gear.

The transmission on the MS3 is one thing that annoys me. From a useless 1st and near useless 2nd at WOT, to the wonky shift feel.

Even with boost limited it's more torque than is practical without some sticky tires and suspension work, even when stock. Not sure if the gearing was shared among the other 3 models, but I have to ask what Mazda was thinking.

Ford Racing has an LSD in their package/track car. Either the electronics take well to it, they turn them off, or there is a calibration that works with the LSD.

if the electronics were smart enough from the beginning, it should work fine without any modification, the real diff reduces the wheelspin detected by the computer so it uses less e-diff

Yes ... hopefully ... the MS3 electronics are fine near stock power levels and become awful once you replace some key components.

The ST is so similar in so many ways to the MS3 it's quite funny. The engine bay is so familiar and it kinda tells you how much our MS cars are a Ford product.

One guy who has replaced says that his brakes/rotors seem much cooler after running on the same track. No real data yet though, just his opinion. I think he said he was getting a temp probe and try to compare to a stocker in the future.

Love the car but don't like the lack of a real diff. Been reading some of the other ST forums and they say brake fade on a track is bad.

I know Quaife makes a real diff. (I think Edge actually sells it...)

Been looking real hard at the speed's replacement when the time comes....Was thinking about the Fiesta ST too. Now the Rex hatch is no more.....

Sorry to thread jack.
