Sending my break in oil w/1100 miles on it just to see how bad it is. Next sample will be in ~1500 miles (which will be 5k on the odometer). I have Motul 8800 in right now, curious to see how it handles everything. Will post results.

I've got a bottle of Rotella T Syn 5W-40 waiting to be mailed to Blackstone. I'll probably get it out tomorrow, so stay tuned for a UOA for Rotella.

Just got my sample back from Blackstone. Some of the values are pretty high, but it was the break in oil changed out early. Glad to see the fuel was not obnoxious, hopefully it stays that way.

Ok, here's my first UOA on my Speed using Rotella T Syn 5W-40. This was my second fill using the Rotella. Looks like I'll continue to use it. Note the high phosphorus and zinc levels that are common with heavy duty oils like Rotella. They are anti-wear additives and detergents. Not sure why my magnesium level is so damn high, but they didn't say it was bad, so I'm not going to worry about it.

MI/HR on Oil = 5,000
MI/HR on Unit = 16,500
Sample Date = 1/28/09
Make Up Oil Added = 0

Universal Averages shown in ( x )

Fuel % = 1.3 (<2.0)
Antifreeze % = 0.0 (0)
Water % = 0 (<0.1)
Insolubles % = 0.3 (<0.6)
TBN = 4.9

COMMENTS: Nothing too unusual showed up in the initial sample from your Mazda. All wear read at or below averages, which is a very good indication of normal wearing parts, especially since this oil was run a little longer than average. Universal averages show normal wear after ~4,100 miles use on the oil. Fuel dilution was found at 1.3%. This is below our problem level and since it didn't hurt the viscosity, we don't think it's a concern, but we will watch it next time. The TBN was strong at 4.9, so the oil has lots active additive left. 1.0 is low. Try 6,500 miles on the next oil.

Just wanted to thank everyone for posting UOA's. Keep in mind that not only do you aid others in picking oils, but every submission of a speed3/speed6 UOA, adds to the lab's database for what's considered "normal" or "average" helping us detect when problems might be occurring.

Remember if you want additional comments on your UOA's, post them to the bobistheoilguy.com forums!

I'll probably go 5,000 mile again and get another analysis done before I start going higher. I don't want to bet everything on one analysis. Remember it's winter now. Much lower temps and oil cooling probably isn't a problem. Once summer roles around, I'm not about to go 6,500 miles on the oil.

Well i dumped my oil today and filled up with 5/40 PP once again. Im going to dump it at 3K and send it off. I will probably get a higher change interval, but since i have no issues getting my PP locally now, i will stick with it for the time being.

Oil: 5 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 & .6 quart of Mobile 1 0w-30 (I had to do this).

Total Miles: 11,000

Miles on Oil: 2,700

Car: 09 Mazdaspeed 3 w/ mods: Cobb Short Ram Intake & Turbo Inlet Pipe, High-Pressure Fuel Pump Internals, Street Unit's Test (mid/race) Pipe, Step colder Denso Iridium Plugs w/ upgraded coil pack springs, CP-e Rear Motor Mount (60 dur),

Driven: Sometimes very hard. Maybe 10-15 full, hard pulls running through all the gears to redline. 60% highway 40% city. I have a daily commute of 20 miles all highway to work, and 20 miles back Monday through Friday. I did a few car warmups as temps have been near or below freezing this entire oil use.

Info: The reason for the short change of only 2,700 miles is b/c I've recently felt the car was "off" and not running near its potential after doing some of the upgrades. Worse than it was running before them. I don't know if this was just the cold weather or what but I was a little worried and wanted to make sure all was well. Also, as I didn't have a UOA on it yet, and I wanted to quickly get a baseline down and start moving the miles up. I will be running my current fill (German Castrol) for 4,200 miles so I can directly compare to the universal averages.

Filter was a Fram Cartridge.

Here's my latest analysis. This is my 3rd pan full of Rotella T Syn. All I can say is I will definitely continue to use this oil. Look at that viscosity, flashpoint and TBN. There's definitely enough additive and viscosity to go abit more miles. I may try 6,000 miles next time, which will probably be the sweet spot for me.

The high manganese is from the 'Octanium' octane booster I've been using since I get crazy knock with the OTS for my mods. Working through it with ATR now and should be weened off it soon. Not sure why they didn't not engine miles.. I'm at 10k

Did you actually add 5.5 quarts of oil during the OCI?

Oil change interval? No I have not had to top off at all, probably just a mistake on the report. I use ~5.5 when I do the changes.

Has anyone tried to just change the oil filter every 3k and send in the oil from the filter for a UOA, to see how long you can go on the same synthetic oil???
After reading this article I will post I was wondering how long I could go with my MS3. Right now I go 3.5k and change oil filter. Then at 7k change both oil filter & oil with synthetic.

Making Sense of Synthetic Lubricants -
All of the manufacturers of synthetic oil tout the benefits of reduced wear, more horsepower, lower operating temperatures, and improved fuel mileage. All of these benefits are derivatives of better cold flow characteristics and higher levels of friction reducing additives that are found in synthetic oils. I can confirm better cold driving characteristics, increased fuel mileage of nearly 10%, noticeably lower operating temperatures, better heat dissipation capability, and long term high temperature stability based on my own experience with synthetic lubricants. Are these benefits enough, however, to persuade average drivers to give up their trusted petroleum oils and pay the extra price for synthetics? Enthusiasts, yes. Average drivers, perhaps not. However, synthetic lubricants can endure extended drain intervals, which is a major consideration toward justification of the higher costs. This benefit is not widely promoted by the major oil producers most likely because they want you to pay a premium for their synthetic oils every 3000 miles just like their regular oils. Most companies don’t bother to tell you that synthetic oils are capable of going 25,000 miles or more without significant breakdown. One customer told me he drove his Toyota more than 50000 miles (with filter changes every 10000 miles) before oil analysis results told him it was time for a change. It is not uncommon for over the road truckers to go several hundred thousand miles between synthetic oil changes but it should also be noted that most are equipped with finer oil filtration devices than most passenger cars. The short trips and stop and go city driving that most of do is much tougher on motor oil than over the road highway driving. In fact, frequent short trips (2 miles or less) and stop and go city driving is considered by some raters as extreme and our cars need increased protection. Fortunately, we can achieve the superior protection and the economic benefits of synthetic oils while staying within the recommendations of our car manufacturers.

Oh, also... I change my oil filter 1/2 way thru my oil life. So with this oil report I posted I changed the filter at 3.5k and then changed both at about 7k. So this time I will change filter at 4k and both at 8k.

This is one heck of an impressive UOA. Your silicon is high, which means you needed to change your air filter, which explains the higher than avg Iron. Despite that, you wear is great. If you had a clean filter, I'd dare say you'd have the best UOA of this engine I've ever seen.

The 40 weight Pennzoil Platinum perfectly sheared down to a high 30 weight. Which is awesome and I'm guessing exactly what you wanted. Any chance you have another new UOA with this oil? I'd love to see the numbers on a clean run with a good air filter, I'd bet they would be astonishing.

I'm going to compare my German Castrol run to this UOA and decide which one to go with. But I'm MIGHTY impressed with the PP 5w-40 Euro formula!!

Here's some online for those that are interested ($32 for 6 quarts)...

Pennzoil Synthetic 5W40 European Formulation - Case 6/1 Qt

Note these Euro formulations are made specifically for long drain intervals. This oil could go 7k miles easy, even on our engines.

sorry I thought I posted the last one up. Check out this one, I ran it longer, and still had good results.

WOW! That is flat out awesome UOA. The 40w sheared down to a high 30w, which is what our car calls for anyhow, so it's perfect. This is the best UOA I've seen to date. Good to see you got your silicon down, that obviously helped. Man, this oil is the bees knees. We need to get the word out.

Dude, did you post this on BITOG? If not, do you mind if I link to it from there and of course credit you. What was your driving like? Hwy, cty, etc.?

I didn't post it anywhere else. Yeah no problem, link away.

My driving was a combination of a lot. My commute to work is about maybe a 10 minute drive, city. I always try to run it for the full 10 minutes though, and never hammer on it unless its been running for at least 10-15. I did a few road trips too on that oil, mostly from Burlington to PA, 800mi round trip, so theres a big chunk of highway miles too.

Other than the commute, and the road trips its all city. And lots of beating on the car too. I'm not abusive, but I'm not shy about feeling the torque

Awesome TBN for that kinda mileage on the oil. It's consistent too. If people are changing this oil every 3,000 miles, they're definitely wasting their money.

Why does it say Miles on Oil is 8,312 miles? Shouldn't it be 2,700? Seems to me they think you put way more miles on the oil than you actually did.

Wow man, that doesn't look good to me. Compare with my UOA above, which had the same mileage (overall) on the car. Your copper wear is terrible. Mine by comparison was 12. Yours was 78. That's huge. This is why I don't like M1 5w-30. It always has high iron wear and sometimes copper too. I would seriously change oils if I were you.

Well I changed to rotella t6 synthetic so well see what happens on this next one. Other than copper did you see any areas for concern? What is high copper lvl attributed too? I dont know if I can use PP yet just seen alot of damage penzoils done in the past.

This is not good. You have some pretty bad fuel dilution going on despite what they say. Look at your flashpoint. Your wear is awesome though so it looks like it didn't effect the oil's ability to protect. Still, I'd find a new oil.

btw opt_ms3, BITOG was most impressed w/ your UOA!!
