Maybe they're factoring in the colder climate.

Got letters for both the VVT and turbo in the mail yesterday. Too bad I'm already at 75K miles.

Well, crossing my fingers! Stocked out everything besides DP (still with stock CBE) and Forge BPV. Have all maintenance recipes on passenger seat. Car is sitting at the dealership with 42K awaiting for inspection tomorrow morning 7 AM. Sucks it'll be 58 degrees haha, VVT sounds so much worst in colder weather but you can still hear the ticking regardless. As for smoke, it only does randomly so not sure how they plan on testing for it.

IMO, they will probably just order the parts and service both the turbo/ventilation and the VVT without much inspection. The dealership is going to do what it can to get paid by Mazda, unless there is some obvious maintenance issues or excessive modding why would they want to deny you?

I'll post up tomorrow and write about the progress, issues or ETA on completion.

Which dealership did you leave your car with? Also, I find that my VVT/timing chain isn't as noisy in the cold. I figured the cold, thick oil kept the chain from rattling? Every time I start my car in the garage, or while the engine's still warm = mega rattle. Not so much after the car's been sitting outside at work all day in the cold.

Jeff Schmitt Mazda. They have always taken pretty good care of me, even helped me go after the dealership I bought my car used from after a malfunctioning TB.

As for the timing chain, I hear it after any cold start, but for me its rattles more in the winter, or its just progressively gotten worst over THIS winter and I just assume it was from the cold.

That's where my car is, too. I gave them a laundry list on top of the two SSPs. This will be a good benchmark for the two of us. Something's fishy if they give us extremely different ETAs Good luck!

Well FMA! Service manager called. They let the car idle for 2 hours and didn't smoke. They said their Mazda rep told them they had to validate the smoke in order to warrant a replacement or vent kit. Also they took the valve cover off and the Mazda Rep told them they are only servicing VVT replacement if it leaves scratch marks on the cover, and there wasn't one (since the chain is just loose and not that bad yet) Well that was a waste of 2 hours stocking out. He said since I still have more than 25K of coverage still he is certain my car will shit out on both by then and to bring it back in. Kinda bullshit IMO, even the service manager repeatedly apologized saying he wished he could service me. FYI to all those going in, Mazda Reps are going to be assholes.

BTW, he also said that the Mazda Rep told him everyone and their brother was talking their cars in and they have yet to really validate any replacements. WTF?

Steve told me to take video next time it smoked and he'll see what he can do with the Mazda Rep.

Got my letter re: VVT, but no noise yet @ ~15k miles. I'm guessing this is a matter of 'when', not 'if' though.

Im not sure about that. I'm at 75K and I bought the car at 22K. I beat the shit out if it, and I have no VVT issues. My turbo smoked occaisionally until I put in an OCC.

I'm not saying you'll be fine, just that it's not proven that it will occur for 100% of the cars.

Yeah, our CX-7 had the turbo swapped at 48K and the VVT at 84K. My MS3 has 73K miles on turbo and VVT. Thanks to that 3,000 miles, my couch is fucked for any warranty replacement.

The dealer is fixing my VVT - Parts should be in by Wednesday. They "couldn't reproduce the exhaust smoke," so I'll just keep an eye on that... maybe take a video like mikelevi.

But, the really good news is they found one of my wheels is bent, not a bad bearing, as originally suspected. I think that's about the only thing not covered under my aftermarket warranty. Time for aftermarket rims, eh?

Sending my video as we speak. Not five minutes after I left did it happen. Car smelled like burnt oil when I picked it up, making me believe it did smoke while it was there but no one was watching. Lets see what they say now?

Just tell them that's what mine looks like, too. Steve actually mentioned your car when I called this morning. "I've got a 6 here that's rattling like crazy." I figured we'd be in opposite situations right now.

Hey man, what are you doing to that cat on your signature picture? You got him so mad lol

hey kick question. I had the VVT valve replaced on my CX-7 like 2 years ago If I recall correctly. So the part that was replaced with, was that the improved part or the replaced was with same shitty part again.

Concern is that I'll be due again on it, once I get out of warranty.

Any one else get some head's up on the part they are putting in our car now? is it the same old shit as the first ones?

He's. Confirming tomorrow morning if the video will suffice.

If they plan to just let the cars idle with any driving I don't see how many cars will get repaired. I guess we need to specify that it smokes after "driving and idle"

Scratches on the valve cover only mean the chain is stretched.
I'm not sure how that invalidates a bad vvt.
Did they buy you some gas for burning through two hours of idling?

There is a fucking tsb for the fucking VVT already out there mandating what they need to do. It's on mcx7.com but I'm too lazy to fucking look in the tsb section for it. But you can, as print it out. Then take it to the dealer and roll it up, swat him in the face with it and say "bad boy!" and proceed to pee on their computer.

I was so tempted to take a gmc put for a test drive and take a shit on the floor, wipe my ass on the seat and leave, but the sales monkey went with me.

I'm stocked out and ready to go in Wednesday morning. 90% sure VVT is starting to go bad and 50% sure turbo needs to be looked at. (It's smoked on me.. a few times. Hard to replicate). Will keep updated.

Had an identical issue. I had another stealership check the car out before I bought it - they noted a smoking turbo on their PPI. I took it to my local stealership and they said if they can't replicate the smoking (or if *I* can't) the people at Mazda service won't replicate a replacement.

I have never seen it smoke, but they told me to take a video if it occurs as well.

Update: Service Manager called me. Mazda agreed to send replacement turbo and vent kit authorization as long as I could provide all oil change receipts for every 3,000 miles. WTF?? Serious, with full synthetic, 3K per change? I have to dig through all my receipts. I have only attempted to change my oil once, every other time has been Midas or Dealership. If they honestly deny me because I changed it every 5K or less I am going to shit a brick and then kill someone with it.

It is a simple case of showing them the owner's manual stating the 7,000 requirement. If they give more shit, shift the manual up their ass.

Direct them to the owners manual that indicates 7.5k oil change intervals.

Do you have the video they approved posted anywhere? I've seen varied extremes of exhaust videos, but would like to see one from someone who actually got 'approved' for a replacement. Thanks for your help!

Just find the worst one in the same colour as your car and roll in with that.

Here is the video I sent that was approved by Mazda in order to approve my Turbo Replacement and vent kit. Hope this helps you all out!

Ok, please excuse the narration. A little pissed about rearranging my busy work day to get the car serviced, only to pick it up and experience the problem immediately after they "couldn't duplicate."

i'm scheduling an appointment with my local dealership for sometime soon with all my mods still on it. (list below)

Not a single modification has any bearing on the timing chain or the VVT. My chain is loose, and i want that chain tensioner replaced.

results to be posted later. Win or fail.

Sucks for me since the closest mazda dealership is over 250 miles from me.
Luckily I'm under 60,000 miles so the dealer said I can get a rental car for the 2 days they need the car. I will be doing this feb 10th and 11th in denver at lakewood mazda. I just hope if I drop it off early friday, that they will be finished by saturday

agreed. bought mine at 28k, drive it pretty hard, and have had no vvt, timing chain or turbo issues (hear that? that's me knocking on wood).

no catch can, but i have bnoon bolt and my tip never seems to be oily.. (no, not that tip..)

oops, well, i guess you gotta get the engine pretty damn hot for the vvt to actuate.

retested mine this morning as soon as i pulled into work. very Tight, as in: can only get maybe a millimeter of movement and it could just be my finger's skin giving way before the metal, lol.

Pretty loose without the tensioner activated though... Probably about half an inch to inch of slack?

Going to let it sit. only have 56,500 miles on it. plenty more time for shit to fail ;p

Wanted to give a final update. Service Manager called today, after providing receipts for every 5 K miles worth of oil changes, he was able to approve and order a new K04 (said it was the upgraded version KO4-22+?) Vent Kit, and then out of nowhere he told me for my troubles he is changing out the VVT as well.

Dropping off tonight, done by EOD Friday!

@mikelevi: are you saying that the turbo they are putting in place now are better than what they did 1 - 2 years back?

If so I'm fucked up because I had mine changed end of 2010.

can anyone confirm this please?

Also I got the VVT replaced earlier 2010. But I'm hearing stuffs with breather valve, I'm not sure If I got this, Did someone please had this done and post a pic?

Thanks
