Default 2013 Build because ZZB

Alright back story is, my rings committed suicide and cyl 3 decided it didn't want to be part of the family anymore. So I decided to build the piss out of it. The block was not vented, although the rings caused some serious yuck on the cylinder walls. I had 2 options, fresh block or get mine sleeved. So I got it sleeved. They are darton sleeves. And heres my list of shitz

-Said block^
-K1 rods
-wiseco pistons (stock bore)
-keyed crank
-clevite bearings
-L19 head studs
-ARP main studs
-crower valve springs
-SP63 stage 2 cams
-CPE turbo mani
-GT3076 (had before meltdown so im gonna see what it can really do)
-Tial 44mm ewg
-CPE fmic
-SP63 6th port
-PNP intake mani
-HTP 4" intake
-UR catless downpipe/TP
-Corksport catback
-ACT 6 puck clutch/streetlite flywheel
-Red tail lights (VHT bro)

(I have reviewed that a few times and feel as though im forgetting something)
For non-engine stuff I got a set of Ground Control coilovers set up as "aggressive" for the "occasional trip to the drag strip"

I also got some Rays Gram Lights 57DR 18x8.5 wheels.

I will post as many pics as I have right now and I'll post some more later. I haz a lot more pics, but I'm on my work computer.

I hope that my power curve will be pretty damn sexy with the spool of the ATP hotside (might go for a .82 ar in the future) and the top end of those cams.

Looking good.

Are you self tuning or have you decided on a Tuner?

Looks great man, nice motor setup. But why only go with K1 rods if you're going that balls out on the rest of the motor?

Just out of curiosity, how many miles before the rings died on the 13 motor? Any extenuating circumstances leading to the failure?

Because this build took off much more than expected.. I was originally going to replace pistons and rods and run a BNR, but the damage was more than expected and things changed.

I really had a hard time pinpointing it, but I did find the hardline from the cdfp to the rail had a small fracture in it. but so small I mean maybe a drop every hour or 2 was making it out.. other than that it's pretty mysterious. 24,000MI

Not that building it is the wrong choice, but is there any reason you didn't approach mazda for a replacement with that low mileage? Should have still been within the factory warranty period.

I honestly just wanted to build it. It crossed my mind though.

Okay weird issue, I searched and searched but never found my exact problem. Car runs perfectly healthy, but in a light bulb about to go out kind of way, I get P0340 the cam position sensor circuit malfunction. The car will hiccup and even die at idle...but...if I reset the ecu it goes away and runs perfectly again. Just looking for some insight. One theory that was pointed out to me was that if its a Hall-effect type sensor, it could be kinda clogged up with the metallic dust from breaking in an engine. That one makes sense to me because it ran fine for about 4 days without this I am doing my first oil change today, and seeing if it helps. But that is my only theory as of now, it's obviously an electrical issue, everything is mechanically sound. Let me know what y'all think and if you have any ideas.

Turns out that that theory was exactly what happened. Pulled the sensor while doing an oil change and there was glittery oily muck on it between the sensor and the cam, cleaned it off...code gone

So... the car jumped timing at cruising speed on the highway. New VVT.. keyed crank.. pinned cams. Lets see what the shop has to say about this ever so mysterious fuck up. Talked to fricken everyone about this, and we've all ruled out equipment failure. It's completely boiled down to what did they not do correctly...and we'll see when the engine is once again apart. It was for such a brief second in neutral when the pistons hit the valves, I'm hoping only the valves took the hit.

Wow! That is pretty shitting, I can't think of what could have gone wrong with the pinned cams/keyed crank.

How many miles were on the new build before this happened? Did you replace the tensioner and chain at the time of rebuild?

Yes, everything was replaced...1500 miles. Driving at 70mph at 3krpm car started to shake earthquake status so I put it in neutral, dash lit up like a Christmas tree, heard pistons hit valves for a couple seconds and it turned off

they didn't make relief cuts in the pistons for the exhaust valves... someone please tell me how a show neglects piston to valve clearance.

Were the pistons installed incorrectly? Wiseco design doesn't have relief cuts in the pistons on the exhaust side since you went with stock compression; only on the intake side.

Edit - After looking at your pics they are installed correctly.

What head gasket thickness did you go with?

Did you check the timing before you pulled everything apart? If the car was running for 1500 miles I think it would be safe to say that something went wrong.

so what happened was the car didn't "jump time" per say, but the exhaust valves started hitting the pistons. must have been painfully close after the build and then when it was broken in they moved just enough to shatter my dreams once again

Plenty of people have run the OTS Wisecos with out a problem, CPE and MAnley don't have Exhaust cut outs either and haven't had an issue. Speed performance put cut outs in their custom ones for people that want to run their higher lift cam shafts.

Could be more to it regarding metal clogging the sensor earlier in your thread, as yours seems to be the first it happened to during break in from the build threads etc i have read. I'm no mechanic though

To have enough metal to clog up the sensor it may be from something failing/shearing itself in the VVT area and finally falling apart.
Hope it gets sorted, nothing worse than reading new builds going bad.

You're right, I haven't updated in a while. pistons did not hit valves, what I heard was a valve bouncing around. Lifters failed bad. Head is being sent to Pablo... then I will elaborate when I know

Update: The issue is mysterious still, which points at the shop messed something up. I really stopped trying to figure it out. As of right now engine is being cleaned and speedperf6rmanc3 is rebuilding a head for me. The problem was completely isolated to the head and honestly I'm not about to let sketchball over here mess something else up... so I spoke to Pablo and we decided that he was the man for the job. I'll have peace of mind knowing my head was built by sp63 and not someone who doesn't know anything about the MZR (clearly). I expect a running car again in the next month or so.

Alright finally an actual update. with help from Pablo from speedperf6rmanc3, we found a few things; one valve spring was literally a different size. It was crower, but we think its from a 3v mustang as they are technically the same part number I guess (have not confirmed this). How did it get in there? Mystery. Also the bucket clearances were far too tight, and the journal clearances were never measured. Pablo has since finished rebuilding me a proper head. The short block is assembled and the head should be on soon. by the end of may I see a car that runs correctly.

I have been considering after this season switching to either a 5862 or 6262 with .64AR vband inlet/outlet.

also, I have a question for someone who actually knows. Ive been trying to find a definitive answer on what the K1 rods can handle...as some of you may know the decision to take this build further was after I already had them. I've heard don't push over 600 and I have heard CPE said basically go to town... that's in another thread on here somewhere. Im just looking for some insight on that. IMO I think people are mislead about their strength based on price, I know there are some Honda guys out there with big power on K1s. I really don't have a goal that's too far over 600 just based on the fact that I don't spent a ton of time tracking the car.

Update: Car is running awesome. Last few things are getting done this week (new injector seals, JMF mani, spark plugs) then it'll be tuning time!
