Really this makes things to easy. You may as well have come to my house and built my motor. Thanks though. I will have a build diary thread soon enough.

Thanks to the OP for an awesome and very informative thread!! I've been playing around with the idea of buying a spare short block and making it a long winded workshop project to tackle (hopefully) before my stock block decides it's time to leave this life. I'm sure when I get into all the additional tools and bs, I'll be back at saving for a sp63 pop & drop; BUT....it's great to see the end from different angles.

Thanks I'm going with a south bend. Do you think I need to worry about balancing it if the crank will be balanced.

Most machine shops will be able to balance a flywheel, and some can do pressure plates. Most of the aftermarket units with billet aluminum flywheels will be balanced in process, so nothing to worry about.

My Clutchmasters aluminum flywheel was checked and did not need balanced. My steel ACT flywheel was checked and did need balanced.

Question Balance shaft and crankshaft severe damage

Recently I noticed a loud knock that started very settle followed by grinding. After taking to a mechanic they were clueless to what was wrong, so I started ripping my engine bay apart.

once the engine was out I took off the oil pan to discover this...

Will the crank need to be replaced? (im 18 finishing high school and can't really afford it with out going into debt)

I'd say its time for a BSD. but maybe someone else who knows the inner workings of the motors will chime in and not rip into you to hard for posting on this thread instead of starting your own. gotta wonder where all that metal went too....

I know I should have started my own thread. Thanks for not tearing into me. I ordered a BSD few days ago, had a mechanic look at it too. The crank is fine to leave with the chipped gears with a BSD.

Did you have the crank bearings checked out? I'd be worried about the metal from the gears working it's way thru the motor too

Default New Member...Troubleshooting a Speed6

Hi New member, working with my son on a recently purchased and now blown up Speed6 (2006). Head is now off, seeing both exhaust burned up (chunks gone) on cylinder #1 . Next question is what is root cause, and do I rebuild or buy a new (rebuilt) head?
