Well that's not something you see everyday!

Curious to learn if it lives up to the hype. How much did you end up paying for it, and what color you going to go with?

Not only that, but in order to make it look semi-cohesive with the rest of the car, you would need deeper side skirts to match the fact that it extends so far below the OEM bumper cover, and a front splitter would probably be necessary too.

Surely it creates pockets of turbulence just in front of the bumper.
At some point I am going to cut some ports in it, when i find a tasteful way to do it.
Some race teams must have done some aero aids for the under side of our cars ?

Pretty sure this stuff isn't designed in a wind tunnel. Even if it was, it's doubtful it would make any measurable difference unless approaching mach 1.

DG Motorsports had a pretty neat looking diffuser for the Gen1.

Correct it is a cosmetic upgrade.

It's not. And LOL at mach 1....functional aero works at realistic speeds. The things that hit mach 1 do so in a straight line only....or in the air. And typically they have jet engines....and often guns and bombs.

A functional diffuser is only one piece in a set of panels used to minimize the pressure differentials around the car. Specifically the diffuser is used in conjunction with a splitter, flat under body, and functional wing or spoiler in the rear of the car. The splitter in front is combined with an air dam and does what it says...splits the air. Air on top of the splitter hits the air dam and stagnates causing an area of high pressure at the front of the car that pushes the nose down. The air traveling beneath the splitter is sped up and creates an area of low pressure, helping to pull the front of the car down. This is called downforce.

The flat undertray gives a smooth area to minimize turbulence under the center of the car, again creating an area of relatively low pressure pulling the car down to the road surface.

The diffuser works in cobination with a car body (in racing, road cars typically aren't optimized here) or spoiler or wing (these are not interchangeable terms, they are are each specific aerodynamic components) to combine the air streams above and below the car as smoothly as possible behind the car, and as far away as possible to keep a minimal pressure differential between the front and rear of the car.

All of these pieces must be attached rigidly to the chassis of the vehicle and made of sufficiently stiff materials as not to deflect more than their worth under aerodynamic loads.

All that to say, anyone who thinks a 6" piece of plastic attached to your bumper can act as a functional diffuser has no understanding of functional aerodynamics. OP clearly does not fall into this category and understands what he bought. Does it look cool? Yeah. But that's where it ends

One of the thing that drives me nuts on the speed 3 is the big pocket in front of the rear bumper. Seems like there should be some under tray. I mean the car is pretty stable at speed, but there must be all kinds of turbulence under and around the gas tank.

We'd need to run detailed CFD with a highly accurate model to know.

There's a good chance, I think, that at speed the pocket of air will be "capped off" by air moving under the car, essentially creating a near stagnant pocket that isn't causing much additional drag at high speed.

Case in point, truck beds. there's an assumption among the general public that an open truck bed creates a lot of drag when air hits the tailgate so they leave the gate down. At slower speeds this is true, but due to low velocity the force of drag is minimal. At higher speeds the air moving over the cab traps the pocket of air in the bed and the stream never hits the tail gate. An open tail gate at speed allows the top and bottom air streams join together sooner than a raised tail gate, lowering the pressure directly behind the vehicle, increasing the pressure differential from front to back, causing higher overall drag.

I think the same thing may happen at least to some degree with our rear bumpers. Yes it would be more effective to cap off the rear of the car but there's so much going on with the rear subframe and suspension it's not feasible to do so from the manufacturer's perspective. A race team will figure it out but that's a minute, highly specialized and customized application where any tiny advantage is nearly priceless.

I work with Ansys. I can CFD. That being said, seems like a waste of computational resources, per @anavrinIV;s earlier comments.

Running a steady-state simulation wouldn't take long....But who's gonna model the underside of the car?? LOL

Correct I have the nextmod front and side lips that will be going on with this.

I appreciate the comments on the technical aspect. I had to assume car that is speed limited to OEM 154.5 would have thought this out to some degree !
Good call on the pocket.
I wish I understood as much as you guys. Even though I read plenty casually about aero
But nice to have some educated resources.

Looking forward to the upcoming pictures

4 years in engineering school and years of personal reading on chassis and suspension design and aerodynamics. It all amounted to that short rambling.
