I have access to a CNC Mill, along with a fair bit of material - What should I make?

Just one-offs, unless somebody really wants something.

Currently I have
6061 Aluminum (I might also have some 7050)
4340, 4130 Steel
13-8, 303 stainless
and some Titanium, somewhere around here.

How about a tool to lock the flywheel using the starter bolts. Elongate the mounting holes so the tool has about 1/2" of adjustment and it'll be perfect for holding the motor at TDC while timing it.

I have no idea why none of the vendors makes this thing..

Can you CAD and/or program the machines?

As far as ideas, just look around at the major vendors and their products. Anything you don't want to pay for, make.

I.e. I'm fabricating some strut mounts with spherical bearings b/c rallyx killed my stock mounts. I'm too cheap buy corksport, and I'm not 100% sold on their design, so I'm fabricating my own.

I can CAD/Cam yes. And that's basically what I'm doing. Problem is half the time I can't find any information on what the part dimensions are or anything. It's kinda guess and go with it.

If you need any help on the CAD/CAM, let me know. I'm well versed in CAD, and I feel confident with CAM. I love doing that stuff.

Just a few of the things I've machined. The billet turbo manifold is almost done, I just haven't had a lot of time to get it totally finished yet.

those are some serious pieces of metal they're letting you play with, not just cut-offs and scraps.

Yeah, I'm just using what I had for available stock. It's 2 4" wide pieces of 304L, Tig welded together with 309L. It's similar to steedspeed (where I got the inspiration) and several of their manifolds have multiple welds of different billets.

There are people that would kick your ass just to get the scrap metal you cut out of that.

@Bingo; No gated shift setup because we seem to have a floating stick under the console. Where the "gates" are seems to be different from car-to-car, probably because of cable play, trans, SSP, etc. I'm sure it's doable with wide gates or something, or as a one off.

All of this is done on an Sharp 2 axis with variable Z axis mill that uses Acurite G2 software that is conversational coding. We have other machines like Okuma MB-56VB's and a few other Okuma's and some OKK's but I don't have the real know how or access to program them at the moment. We do large scale industrial work so our scrap bin alone is usually full of some pretty serious metal and they don't mind if we grab any scrap to use usually. I mean they're obviously going to have a problem if I try to go start machining a 100 lb piece of incoloy or something. But we have an abundance of billet aluminum, 1018, 422SS, and other stuff. We don't usually carry 304L like that, but it was a order they ordered and wound up not needing, so I just lucked out there.

Sweet, always thought convo coding was nifty. I am well versed in NX, but not so much on the CAM side, though I've taken some classes at my work.

We have a pair of Mazak's, both 5 axis, one mill, one lathe. Another rando 3axis and a bunch of manual Bridgeports. Always hoped to have enough room/real estate to have a small shop with a Bridgeport and lathe. I don't have a ton of direct experience machining, but I have designed countless fixtures to be milled, many of which I was able to work directly with the machinist and he all but let me push the buttons.

That's a really sweet gig you've got there. Really looking forward to seeing that IM all built up.

Well if you need a few dimensions or help with stuff let me know. I have most of the dimensions for the stuff I've made. Plus other stuff like egr delete, billet injector clamps, intake manifold gaskets. I'll be doing my own sixth port setup next with a ST manifold.

As far as the machining side the things all I can say is learn some manual machining first and start to figure out feeds and speeds for different materials. Obviously it will not be anywhere near as fast as a full blown CNC, but will give you an idea of the hardness of different metals and how carbide or HSS with different coatings on them allow you to run differently. You'll get it down. Just takes time and fucking stuff up a few times here and there.

I need a part for a 1990 mx6. What I need is the crank pulley with a trigger wheel mounted to it. I would prefer it out of aluminum, but steel would be fine too.

I can send you a crank pulley to copy and the trigger wheel that will be mounted to it.



The trigger wheel will need to be adjustable; possibly with some set screws?

Depending on cost I wouldn't mind using the stock pulley. I have one with the rubber taken out (the rubber has been known to fail) that can be welded together and machined to accept the trigger wheel.

The pictures are not my own and I'm not sure if the size of my trigger wheel is the same as the one in the picture, but mine is just like that one.

(marvel at its bling-tasticness ) Magnetic pickup The TEC3 likes to use the 11th tooth of the trigger wheel (from the missing teeth while the engine is at TDC) to start its count. I had to create a mount for the magnetic pickup so that it could be oriented properly to the trigger wheel tooth in question and also firmly affixed to the engine. There are a couple bolts to the left of the crank pulley that seemed to be mounted on the same plane. That would allow me to build a mount that would orient the mag pickup in the 10-o-clock ish area of the trigger wheel. This is what I came up with. The bracket was a fairly simple thing. I built it so I could have adjustment for tilt, height and distance away from the block (you can see the slots on the “L” bracket). Once I finalized the correct orientation I wanted, I drilled and tapped screws to pin everything into place. I reused the existing screws as the added thickness of the mount was thin enough to still have ample thread engagement….at least on the bottom of the mount. The top had the additional thickness of the “L” bracket and I preferred to have a bit more cushion in terms of thread engagement there. I found a longer screw from a disassembled transmission and used that for the top of the mount. Heres how it all looks assembled. The mag pickup had to be wired up. The inputs from the distributor go straight to the mazda ECU. Since the path is direct and no other component uses those circuits, they are pretty much “unassigned” pathways, so I used the distributor plug to send the necessary signals from the mag pickup to the TEC3. There are four wires in the distributor plug, I only used three since the TEC3 needed pos, neg and a shielding ground. I used the red, blue and yellow wires of the distributor and created an adaptor. so basically….(tec3 requirement : mazda wire color : mazda pinout) Positive + : red : pin 3H Negative - : blue : pin 3E Shield : yellow: pin 3F (continued)
