Default My journey to Freektuneland

Well a couple months ago I had an itch to modify my daily driver, a 2013 CWP Mazdaspeed3, something I repeatedly told myself that I wouldn't do. I restrained from doing so for more than a year and 30k miles, but my daily commute was just becoming boring again. Florida summers just seem to be getting hotter and hotter, and well you know the effects of heat on a turbocharged vehicle. The speed didn't feel happy anymore. So I decided to start with the basics, picked up a Cobb APv3, Autotech internals, NGK 1 step colder plugs, JBR 3" Intake, RMM and TMM, a CNT Catless DP with a 3" CBE, and a CPE TMIC. I picked up some OTS tunes through a vendor and ran them for about a week. The care felt completely different, in a good and bad way. The powerband was quite useless on the street. It made gobs of TQ early on and fell flat on its face in the top end. It was fun for a few days roasting the tires in 3rd gear, but thats not what I wanted. The delivery was not smooth at all, and it felt like the tune was wandering on it own. The idle was jumpy, boost was inconsistent and I felt like a needed someone to spend some time dialing the car in. I got in touch with Justin after a week of installing everything and I was on my way. I opted to go with a 93 custom tune and added a side of corn as well. I received my base map within 2 days, sent Justin the requested logs and after 4 revisions he had my car dialed in on 93. After each revision, the car became smoother and more enjoyable. I had realized how much faster the car has actually become, and its completely usable on the street. I threw together a start to finish virtual dyno to show the 93 tune progress, and will do the same for the E33 tune.

My freek tunes have been great. I have a high mileage stock block on a bigger turbo and it's been running strong for a few years now.

I still love driving it. I've learned to feather the throttle in 1st in 2nd so they don't feel nearly as useless and what power I do tap into feels great and torquey. Though it's much easier to control boost with your foot when there's already a bit of turbo lag.

My Freek Tune is awesome. Can't wait to drop off the kids at school in the morning and have some fun. I have a BT with a high mileage stock block but runs perfect and does not leak a drop of anything. Will continue to work with him as I add mods.

It'll be nice when the temps drop in a few months. Its also nice that they are opening up another Racetrac gas station right by my job that has E85 at every pump, so thats two stations within 15 miles of my home. Cant wait to get this tune dialed in.

I didnt have a dedicated tuner, but I purchased 2 custom flash tunes from Stratified, and Ive contacted them numerous times regarding the tunes and trying to get credit for the tunes towards a full custom tune and never received one response. So I went with who a few guys recommended after doing some research of my own.

I hear that on the temps! Looks like you and I are in the same boat. I too also have an OTS+ tune from Stratified. It really does open up the power, but it feels kinda on or off. Now I'm not trying to discredit them for it is still an OTS tune, but I miss the drivability days of smooth acceleration. In my past tunes I have asked questions, and not all of them have them answered (not Lex btw). I haven't even bought anything yet from Justin, but he does get back to me eventually. Which to me says he's busy juggling work and home life, but still cares. Will definitely be going Freektunes route after I replace my clutch next month.

Great job man! Not talking about the tune, but commenting on the 3 year old thread.

While I’m here, pearly Speed haven’t seen you around lately. Still have the speed?

Freek is the first, last, and only tuner as far as I'm concerned.

Next mod is 5th port to reach the 450+ WHP Barrier.

I'm still deciding to pick up a meth kit. But, when/if I do, I'll be at his house knocking on his door for a tune since I work 20 mins away from him

And btw also saw the E85 sign driving by that gas station. I want to get a tune for it but if spend anymore on this car before we get a house, the wife will kill me. Been seeing stories of zzb after going fully bolted + corn. Or smokey turbo

Are you gen1 or Pu? The only issues I've read about e85 problems is from those running over 50/50 mixes and causing spill valve problems. To be cautious, spill valve cleaning isn't that time consuming or difficult, and I'll add in a maintenance interval to do that on a set basis.

Likewise, I can't say anything bad about the stratified ots tune, as I needed something to run the car with the 3" intake since Cobb decided to yank ATR. The ots worked and made power, but a full tune is really the way to go. The fact that Justin does as many tunes as he does, and still makes time to answer questions from anyone shows the level of customer service he dedicates to his business.

I've never heard any of those things from people tuned correctly.

Heres my final tune numbers, 93 tune vs e33 tune. Same stretch of road, same time of day, temp was cooler during the e33 run.

JBR 3" intake, Cnt 3" Catless turboback, CPE TMIC, JBR Boost tubes, Autotech Internals, NGK 1 Step colder plugs, an an AP of course. #'s seem a bit low, compression was good across the board before modifying a month and a half ago. Im seeing people with less mods making more power.

What gas station do you use for 93? I know with an E85 blend, you can have some one with just an intake and test pipe putting up similar numbers as fully bolted on stock turbo with the same fuel. You also have to take into effect that it's hot as shit right now. I've got a CPE top mount and start to knock when the temp is 90 degrees plus after driving for a while. So I don't know when you took your logs, what was your BATs. How's the drivability?

Forget the numbers, how does the car feel? Fast?

What exactly were your compression numbers?

I typically use shell fuel for 93, and racetrac for my e33 mix as its the only carrier of e85 around here. It has been hot as hell lately, which sucks for power. Maybe I was expecting more of a gain, my main concern was my 93 tune was done in ten degree hotter weather, higher bats and almost made as much as I did on E33 in better conditions. I also made numerous runs on the same, flat smooth stretch of road. Drivability is great, much better than the OTS I was using before.

BATs might have some play here. Not a guru though. Contact Justin with questions about power levels. I'm sure he kept the car safe first and foremost as all the tuners here do. On the bright side at least you can still get on it. I've been waiting more than a month to fix my clutch. Maybe I'll see you around. Take care

Im sure the BATS do have a lot to do with it, I think I was expecting a drastic change going with E. Are you doing your clutch yourself?

Driving up to Orlando to do it with a friend. I think it's just out of my experience level and or comfort level atm, but I want to learn so if I have to do it again, I got it.

Going through the same process now, just sent my basemap logs back to Justin. It's exciting to see the progress on the VDyno originally posted. After 93 is all done, I may just have to run some corn as well, because Illinois. I saw E85 for $1.29 at a station near me a little while ago, beats the hell out of Chicago 93 prices. It would be a crime to not take advantage of those prices, regardless of fuel economy, haha.

I'll have to post up the result when I'm a little further along.

Thanks for sharing.
